Marathon Fundraising Ideas That Actually Work
Creative ways to hit your fundraising goal without annoying everyone you know
You signed up to run a marathon for charity. Amazing. Now comes the part nobody trains you for: raising the money. Here are fundraising ideas that real runners have used successfully.
The “Per Mile” Pledge
Ask people to pledge a dollar amount per mile you run. At 26.2 miles, even $2/mile adds up to $52.40 per person. Get 20 people to pledge and you’ve raised over $1,000 from a single idea.
Birthday or Holiday Fundraiser
If your birthday or a holiday falls during your training, ask for donations instead of gifts. Facebook fundraisers make this incredibly easy, and people love giving to a cause in someone’s honor.
Matching Challenge
Find one generous donor willing to match all donations up to a certain amount. Then blast it out: “Every dollar you give today gets doubled!” Matching campaigns consistently outperform regular asks.
Sell Something You Make
Baked goods, homemade challah, custom jewelry, artwork. Whatever your skill is, offer it in exchange for donations. A “bake sale for the marathon” hits different when people know the story behind it.
Shabbat Dinner Fundraiser
Host a Shabbat dinner and share your mission over the meal. There’s something about breaking bread together that opens hearts and wallets. Keep it simple, keep it personal, and let people contribute what they can.
Social Media Challenges
Create a fun challenge tied to your training. “For every share this post gets, I’ll run an extra mile this week.” Or document your entire training journey and build an audience that wants to support you at the finish line.
Corporate Sponsorships
Local businesses often have community sponsorship budgets. Offer to wear their logo on your race-day shirt or give them a shoutout on social media. A $500 sponsorship is pocket change for most businesses but huge for your goal.
Letter Writing Campaign
Old school, but effective. A handwritten letter explaining why you’re running and who you’re running for can be incredibly powerful. People save handwritten letters. They delete emails.
Team Approach
Running with a team multiplies your reach. When you join Team Friendship, you’re part of a group that collectively tells a bigger story. Your network plus their networks equals exponential fundraising potential.
Fundraise with Purpose
Team Friendship runners raise money for Friendship Circle, creating friendships between teen volunteers and individuals with special needs. Join a team that makes every mile count.
